Master of Science in Criminal Justice- 1 year program

The University of Cincinnati Master of Science in Criminal Justice distance learning degree program is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of working professionals for practice in our complex and challenging criminal justice system. You have the option of choosing our 2-year program which can be completed studying part time, or our 1-year program which requires full-time study to complete.

To provide a comprehensive, contemporary criminal justice program of post-professional studies, coursework is organized into four areas: theory, administration and policy, research, and special topics. In addition to content-based courses, students will complete a demonstration project that will allow them to apply their course knowledge to real world policy issues. You will complete coursework and interact with instructors and peers through an innovative distance learning format and are not required to come to the University of Cincinnati campus. The program involves a combination of lectures via multimedia presentations, readings, online activities, discussion sessions and peer and professional support systems.

Bowling Green State University

The Criminal Justice program at Bowling Green State University produces graduates who can critically assess issues and use that ability to impact the criminal justice system. Students are prepared for a wide range of post-graduation endeavors. Many students successfully pursue graduate degrees in criminal justice and law, as well as public administration, sociology and counseling. Students also distinguish themselves by taking jobs with federal, state and local agencies involved in criminal justice.

A 1988 study by the Police Executive Research Forum provided a good description of the University's criminal justice program. It noted that police agencies do not want higher education to provide technical training. Instead, agencies need students who can look at issues critically, make informed judgments and decisions, have an understanding about human nature and social arrangements, recognize cultural diversity, understand basic research, and communicate effectively.
